GAF Shingle Repair: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

We repair and replace damaged GAF shingles across San Antonio, with most residential repairs running between $350 and $900 installed depending on the number of shingles, roof pitch, and access. Most GAF shingle repairs take one visit, and our trucks carry Timberline HDZ, Timberline Ultra HD, and Royal Sovereign stock plus matching accessories so you’re not waiting on a special order. The call usually comes the same way: a homeowner spots a shingle in the yard after a Texas thunderstorm, notices a dark patch from the street, or finds granules piling up in the gutter after a heavy rain. By the time you see it, water has already been working against your underlayment longer than you’d think.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

San Antonio homes most commonly carry GAF Timberline HDZ (the architectural shingle you see on the majority of newer builds in Stone Oak, Alamo Ranch, and the Dominion), Timberline Ultra HD, or the three-tab Royal Sovereign on older homes throughout Alamo Heights and Jefferson. Each line uses slightly different shingle widths and exposure measurements, and mixing a Timberline HDZ replacement into a Royal Sovereign field creates a visible patch that no amount of sun fading will blend. If you’re not sure which line you have, check the inside of your garage for leftover bundles; the shingle name is stamped directly on the wrapper. No leftover bundles? We identify it on site by measuring the shingle width and counting the exposure, then match it to GAF’s current production color. GAF changes color names over time (weather, not just fashion, shifts the granule blends), so we bring physical samples to the house rather than relying on a name alone. If an exact-match GAF shingle is no longer produced, we’ll show you the closest current color and a couple of quality aftermarket equivalents from the lines we carry so you can decide before anyone climbs a ladder.

Signs Your GAF Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Granules in the gutters or at the downspout outlets. GAF shingles shed some granules when new, but a steady accumulation after year five means the asphalt layer is oxidizing faster than it should, and the shingle is losing its UV protection.
  • Curling corners or lifted tabs. San Antonio’s heat bakes shingles from the top while attic heat pushes from below; GAF’s sealant strips release when they are old or when the shingle was installed too cold for the adhesive to bond correctly.
  • Dark bare patches where granules are gone. Once you can see the black asphalt substrate, that shingle has maybe one to two more seasons in Texas sun before it cracks clean through.
  • Cracks or splits running vertically down the shingle face. This is the classic end-of-life failure for a three-tab Royal Sovereign, and it almost always shows up first on the south and west slopes that take the most afternoon sun.
  • Water staining on the ceiling or exterior wall below a roof penetration. A single slipped or broken GAF shingle near a pipe boot, valley, or chimney flashing will channel water straight into the deck, and the stain inside is usually a few feet away from where the actual problem sits up top.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Antonio, a straightforward GAF shingle repair on a single-story walkable roof with good access typically runs $350 to $650. Add a steep pitch, a second story, or a repair that involves flashing or underlayment replacement, and you’re in the $650 to $900 range. What drives the spread: how many shingles are damaged, whether we are also replacing the underlayment beneath them, whether we need to rework the flashing at a wall or valley, and how much of the surrounding shingles we have to unseal to weave the new ones in correctly. You get a written price before any work starts, not a rough verbal number that changes when the job is done. Our repairs include the replacement shingles or the agreed-upon aftermarket equivalent, new fasteners, fresh sealant at the nail points, and a clean-up photo before the crew leaves. The work itself is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things from the ground or a ladder: count the shingles visibly missing, note which slope they came from, and clear granules out of the gutters so water keeps moving. What we don’t recommend is walking a San Antonio roof in summer. The shingles are hot enough to soften, your footing changes fast on a 6:12 pitch, and a fall from even a single-story eave is a life-changing injury. Repairing a GAF shingle correctly also means unsealing the shingles above and around the damage without tearing the ones that are still fine, and that takes experience with the sealant strength GAF uses; too much force and you create five new repairs trying to fix one. If you have the shingle model and a clear photo of the damage, send it over when you call, and we’ll give you a straight answer about what the repair will likely involve before we schedule anything.
