Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

We install and replace Owens Corning ridge vents in San Antonio year-round, with most installations running between $240 and $480 depending on the length of ridge line and the condition of the existing flashing. We stock Owens Corning-compatible ridge vent material on our trucks, so most jobs are done in one visit. Homeowners usually find us after a storm rolls through and the ridge vent ends up cracked, lifted, or worse: the vent baffles have pulled loose and birds have started using the attic as a perch.

A failed ridge vent in San Antonio is rarely dramatic. No leak pouring through the kitchen ceiling. Instead, it shows up as an attic that won’t cool down in July, a musty smell after the rain, or granules and debris sitting on top of the vent opening. The good news: replacing it is usually a one-day job. The better news: we hand you a written price before anything happens, and we leave a photo of the clean-up before we pull out of your driveway.

Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To

The Owens Corning ridge vent we work with most often is the VentSure series, which comes in a 4-foot length and covers roughly 18 square inches of net free area per linear foot. That spec matters, because San Antonio’s combination of high heat and high humidity means an under-ventilated attic turns into a convection oven that cooks shingles from below. The VentSure design uses an external baffle and an internal weather filter, and if either layer gets brittle or pulled out of alignment, the vent underperforms even though it looks fine from the street.

Here’s the thing to know about compatibility: Owens Corning ridge vent isn’t model-specific to your shingle line the way a flashing kit is. A VentSure 4-foot section works with Duration, Oakridge, and Supreme shingle lines, as long as the existing opening along the ridge was cut to the right width, typically 2 inches. If the slot was cut too wide on the original build, which we see often on San Antonio homes from the 1990s and 2000s, the vent won’t seat properly and no amount of sealant fixes that. We identify the exact part by measuring the ridge slot, checking the remaining filter baffle, and matching the vent cap profile to what’s already on the roof. For the vent material itself, we install OEM Owens Corning sections whenever the roof has an Owens Corning warranty still in force. If the warranty has lapsed, we offer quality aftermarket equivalents that match the airflow specs and cost about 20% less. We’ll show you both numbers before you choose.

Birchbark Roofing San Antonio is an independent roofing contractor and is not affiliated with Owens Corning. We also work with GAF and CertainTeed ventilation products when those match the roof system better. The brand name on the box matters less to us than whether the part actually moves the air your attic needs.

Signs Your Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Attic temperature spikes in the afternoon. A working VentSure ridge vent pulls hot air out continuously. When the baffles crack or the filter clogs with dust and pollen, heat builds up and the attic can run 20 to 30 degrees hotter than it should during a San Antonio summer. That heat load shortens shingle life and pushes your air conditioner harder all afternoon.
  • Birds, bees, or bats at the roofline. The internal weather filter on Owens Corning vent sections is designed to keep insects and nesting animals out. Once that filter tears or pulls away from the baffle edge, critters find the gap. We’ve pulled squirrel nests out of ridge vents more times than we can count in Alamo Heights alone.
  • Granules piling up on the ridge cap. In high wind, a loose VentSure section will shift and scrape against shingle granules, leaving a little pile of them sitting at the vent edge. Granules on the ridge cap are never normal, and the fix usually means re-setting or replacing the vent rather than the shingles.
  • Water staining on the ceiling just below the peak. San Antonio downpours can be intense. A ridge vent that’s lifted or cracked at the seam lets wind-driven rain enter the attic and track down along the joists. Stains near the peak, as opposed to near the eaves, point toward the ridge vent.
  • The vent section sits proud of the shingles. Walk to the street and look at the roofline. Owens Corning VentSure sections sit low and flat against the roof deck. If one end is raised or looks “puffed up,” the nails have pulled loose or the decking has started to swell underneath it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Antonio, replacing an Owens Corning ridge vent runs most homeowners between $240 and $480. The lower end covers a short ridge line, maybe 20 to 24 feet, with basic removal and reinstallation. The higher end covers longer ridges, partial decking repair where rot has set in around the existing vent, or conversions where we’re widening a ridge slot that was cut incorrectly the first time. You’ll see your exact number in writing before we start, and it’s the number you’ll pay at the end. No change orders, no surprise line items.

Every job includes removal of the old vent and any blown-in debris, replacement of the vent material, re-nailing at the correct pattern, and a photo of the cleaned roof and the cleaned areas below before our crew leaves. Shoe covers at the door, drop cloths through the hallway, and a final check of the attic area if we need interior access. The work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the installation isn’t right, we make it right. Erik Lindgren has been walking San Antonio roofs for years, and he’ll walk you through every layer of the estimate before a single shingle comes up, because he believes a written price and a straight answer are the least you deserve.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a difference between checking and replacing. What you can safely do yourself is look: from the street, check whether the vent sections sit flat and consistent, and from inside the attic on a bright day, look for pinpricks of light along the ridge line or daylight gaps at the vent seams. You can also feel for hot spots near the peak in the middle of the afternoon. Those checks tell us a lot before we arrive.

Replacing the vent is where we’d tell you to stop. The ridge line puts you on top of the roof, sometimes on a pitch steep enough that one misstep sends you over the edge. Working around a ridge vent also means nails and sealant near the peak, and getting the sealant line wrong means the next San Antonio storm ends up in your attic. Our crew is background-checked, uniformed, and we do this without turning your yard into a debris field. If the dog needs to stay inside while we work, we’ll coordinate the door schedule with you. Call (903) 354-7802 and we’ll come out, look at what you have, and hand you a written price before anything goes on the roof.
